Entrepreneurial Instincts to Starting a Business

Most of my advisory work is with middle-market companies. They generally have revenues between fifty and one hundred million annually. However, I do like to work with an occasional start-up. I find that it keeps me sharp and in contact with the basic ideas behind any business. There is something immediate and even raw about a start-up environment. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that the team is making something out of very little. Perhaps it is the fact that the team focuses primarily on the business of the business and is just beginning to encounter the challenges of the business of business.

I see many start-ups and only work with one at a time. Over the years, I have developed a set of filters to help me choose which ones to work with. It might surprise you to learn that those filters do not focus on the business of the business - I have worked with companies in a wide range of industries - but on the senior team and my estimates of their ability to learn and grow along with their company.

Six Deadly Small Business Marketing Mistakes - MISTAKE NUMBER THREE

Not Having a Systematic Referral Generating Program

If you don't have a systematic referral program you are missing out on one of the simplest, lowest cost, ways to generate your highest quality customers. Referrals are the lifeblood of small business and if you haven't yet institutionalized a referral program, you're making a huge mistake.

Why are Referrals so Powerful?
The reason referrals are so powerful is because they come from a credible third-party that has experienced first hand the benefits of doing business with you.
They are even more powerful when they come from a friend because you know that a friend has no ulterior motivations but to do what’s in your best interest. You can believe what you friend is saying versus hearing a commercial from a salesperson whose sole purpose is to make money from you.

Referrals are also valuable because most of the time they are completely free. How would you like to receive the benefits of the most compelling sales advertisement on earth for absolutely nothing? You can through referrals.

Six Deadly Small Business Marketing Mistakes - MISTAKE NUMBER TWO

Not Differentiating Your Business From Your Competition

Avis Rent a Car "We're number two. We try harder."
Federal Express "When it absolutely, positively has to be there."
Dominos Pizza "Fresh, hot pizza in 30 minutes or less"

What do all three of these slogans have in common? They are powerful statements of uniqueness that helped to propel their respective companies to success.

Avis Car Rental knew that Hertz, the number one car rental company, was so much bigger than them that they couldn't compete head on so they positioned themselves as the number two car company that worked harder for the customer.

Federal Express based their slogan on a promise of delivery reliability. Dominos based their slogan on the fact that most pizza eaters don't car how much stuff is on it but that it was hot, fresh, and delivered fast.

Your Unique Selling Proposition

Each of these slogans is their respective company’s unique selling proposition (USP). A USP is something that differentiates you from all your competitors both local and industry-wide. It’s what makes you so unique that people will choose to do business with you over any of your competitors. Your USP states your distinct advantage.

Six Deadly Small Business Marketing Mistakes - MISTAKE NUMBER ONE

Not Having A Marketing Plan

In my small business consulting experience I have noticed a similar attribute that is common in most entrepreneurs and business owners. Most are "do’ers" rather than "planners." In reality, being a do’er is perhaps the ultimate mark of a successful person. It’s what makes entrepreneurs a rare breed. Rather than thinking or wishing, they get out there and make something happen.

But I have encountered many small business owners who get into trouble "doing" the wrong marketing activities the right way or "doing" the right marketing activities the wrong way. If you want to "do" the right marketing activities the right way you must start with a marketing plan. You don’t have to kill a tree to create an effective marketing plan. In fact, you can create a successful plan for your small business in just one day. To begin, don’t worry about writing style or making your plan fancy. Just go get a pencil and paper and let’s get started.

Step 1 - Understand Your Market and Competition

How to Start a Consulting Business

Years ago, a "good job" meant working for a large, stable company, getting a
regular income with some additional benefits, and eventually retiring at a ripe old
age. Today, the same definition doesn't hold for many people. Instead, a "good
job" may mean one that leaves time to spend with the family or one that provides
a better-than-average income or one that allows you to work in the comfort of
your own home. If these aspects appeal to you, then consulting may be a viable
option.

Several years ago, I decided to leave the company I worked for and offer my
engineering skills on a contract basis to any company that was willing to pay for
them. I was lucky enough to know several consultants who gave me good advice
on starting out. Here are the questions that I asked six years ago, and that most
people ask me today.

1. When is a good time to become a consultant?

KFC Corporation, or KFC, founded and also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a chain of fast food restaurants based in Louisville, Kentucky. KFC is a brand and operating segment, called a "concept" of Yum! Brands since 1997 when that company was spun off from PepsiCo.

KFC primarily sells chicken in form of pieces, wraps, salads and sandwiches. While its primary focus is fried chicken, KFC also offers a line of roasted chicken products, side dishes and desserts.

The marketing mix is generally accepted as the use and specification of the 'four

The Five Forces Framework And PEST Analysis of Coca-Cola Company

Barriers to Entry:
The several factors that make it very difficult for the competition to enter the soft drink market include:

  • Bottling Network: Both Coke and PepsiCo have franchisee agreements with their existing bottler’s who have rights in a certain geographic area in perpetuity. These agreements prohibit bottler’s from taking on new competing brands for similar products. Also with the recent consolidation among the bottler’s and the backward integration with both Coke and Pepsi buying significant percent of bottling companies, it is very difficult for a firm entering to find bottler’s willing to distribute their product.

How to Select the Right Name for Your Business

Drive through any rural town and you will see that many local businesses are still named after their owners. "Walker's Drugstore" and "Carl's Café" monikers are still common in these areas, but for most new businesses, naming it after yourself is not always the best bet. Many rural American towns are frozen in time -- they are part of a micro-economy that has little room for growth and, in many cases, are on their way out. Most budding entrepreneurs are not looking to start a business in this vein, so most startups should avoid using their own name as the business name.

There are a number of exceptions in which using your own name is really the best marketing option. If you are a well-known expert in your field and customers will be driven to purchase your product because of your name, by all means, use your own name. Artists, such as clothes designers and painters, use their own names for obvious reasons and customers come to identify styles by the artists' names. Small construction firms are also named after the owner, though most national and international startups are getting away from that trend. Doctors, lawyers and accountants incorporate under their own name, but again, they are counting on their positive reputation to drive sales. If your business idea does not rely on your current reputation to succeed, consider developing a more descriptive way to identify your venture.

How Does The Payday Loans Processes Works

How Does The Payday Loans Processes Works?
Payday loans have been in the news for some time now, as tradditional lenders rail againsst them. The reason they have garnered so much attention is that they are extremely popular. Bamnks and other lenders feel justifiably threatened by them and, thus, lash out agaibnst paydy lenders in an attempt to sway popular opinion. Of course, this has done little to stem the flood of consummers masking use of these shotr-term loans. However, while psayday loaans are oviously of immense benefit to consumers, many find they are unclear about the process by which these looans are obtained. You will find a brief rundown of the proess beloiw.

Coca-Cola Business Strategy Part 3

4.0 Five Forces Analysis
Today, soft drink industry is a very competitive industry to be in. Porter's five
forces model shows us that there is already a strong barrier to entry established
by the traditional concentrate producers such as Coca-Cola, suppliers' bargaining
power is strong, buyers' power is weak, substitutes for beverage products are easy
to produce, and the intensity of rivalry is strong since the industry is already
facing a slow growth and high industry concentration.

4.1 Suppliers' Bargaining Power
Suppliers' bargaining power in this beverage industry is strong. For example, the
soft drink ingredient producer - NutraSweet who specializes in producing
concentrate sweeteners. Since there is a rising concern in health and safety
issues in the soft drink drinking within the consumer market, the healthier
sweetener, aspartame, that NutraSweet markets allowed it to have a high impact and
input on costs of each bottler's product costs. Since NutraSweet was the only
marketer that marketed the standard aspartame the costs of using NutraSweet's
aspartame is relatively high compare to other substitutes such as sugar.

Coca-Cola Business Strategy Part 2

3.1.3 Technological Factor
The advancements of technology in the fields of soft drink raw material,
production, information and communication technology (ICT) and logistics have
great positive impacts on the operation of Coca-Cola. The availability of new
soft drink ingredients enables Coca-Cola to introduce new variants of its products
to its existing consumers, not forgetting to attract the new consumer groups. The
use of the latest information technology has made the company "colonized" the new
generation of soft drink consumers with the latest features of song downloading.
The presence of company website enables the world to "keep in touch" with the
latest developments of Coca-Cola. The Digital Sotrytelling Theater, located in
Las Vegas tells stories of Coca-Cola through the use of short video vignettes
developed by multimedia technology.

3.1.4 Social / Cultural Factor
In recent years, there have been voices of anti-Coca-Cola being aroused in the
world marketplace. The most recent case is the call for Coca-Cola to stop its
sponsorship of Live 8 in India. Such negative sentiment is due to severe water
shortages and underground water pollution caused by Coca-Cola production
activities, and distribution of its toxic waste to local farmers as fertilizer.
Top level management shall review their sponsorship policy and business ethics in
foreign countries (Indymedia UK).
